AI SEO Analysis: How AI is Changing SEO in 2026 (And What to Do About It)

SEO in 2026 is not the same discipline it was in 2023. Google AI Overviews answer questions directly on the search results page. ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Gemini send traffic to sources they trust. Ranking on page 1 still matters, but appearing in AI-generated answers now matters just as much.

Short answer: Traditional SEO (keywords, backlinks, technical health) remains the foundation. On top of it, you now need Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to appear in AI-generated results.

What Has Changed in Search in 2026

Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE)

Google AI Overviews now appear for roughly 35–40% of all searches in the USA and UK, according to BrightEdge data from Q1 2026. For informational queries ("how to," "what is," "best way to"), the rate is closer to 60%.

When an AI Overview appears, the average click-through rate for the organic results below it drops by 20–35%. Your page can rank in position 2 and still receive fewer clicks than before because the user got their answer from the AI summary.

The countermeasure: get your content cited in the AI Overview. Pages that are cited in AI Overviews receive a trust signal from Google and often see referral traffic from curious users who click through to read more. Being cited requires meeting specific content criteria (covered below).

ChatGPT Search and Perplexity

ChatGPT Search (now the default for ChatGPT Plus users) and Perplexity together handle an estimated 150–200 million queries per day. Both pull content from the web and cite their sources.

Unlike Google, these tools prioritise content that is:

  • Direct and factual (they are optimised to answer, not entertain)
  • Structured with clear headings (they parse H2/H3 to extract answers)
  • From authoritative domains with consistent content on a topic
  • Recent (updated within the last 12 months for most topics)

Voice and conversational search

Roughly 27% of mobile searches are now voice-based (ComScore, 2026). Voice searches are longer, more conversational, and almost always phrased as questions: "What is the cheapest way to build a mobile app?" rather than "cheap mobile app development."

This means question-format headings and FAQ sections are not just good UX, they are a traffic strategy.

The Three-Layer SEO Framework for 2026

Think of modern SEO as three overlapping layers:

Layer 1: Traditional SEO (still essential)

  • Technical health: fast site, mobile-friendly, crawlable, no broken links
  • On-page optimisation: target keywords in H1, H2s, meta title, and first paragraph
  • Backlinks: links from relevant, authoritative sites in your industry
  • Content depth: comprehensive coverage of the topic, not thin pages

None of this has changed. It is the minimum to be in the game.

Layer 2: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Optimise content to be the direct answer AI systems extract and cite:

  • Answer the main question in the first 60–100 words (the "direct answer block")
  • Use FAQ sections with question-format headings (H2: "How long does X take?")
  • Add FAQPage schema markup so search engines can parse your Q&As
  • Use specific, named statistics rather than vague claims ("73% of SMBs" not "many businesses")
  • Write HowTo sections for process-based topics with numbered steps

Layer 3: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Optimise for being cited by AI models:

  • Build topical authority: cover a subject area deeply across multiple pages
  • Add author bylines with credentials (AI systems trust attributed content more)
  • Include publication dates and update dates on all articles
  • Reference credible third-party sources within your content
  • Ensure your site is accessible to AI crawlers (robots.txt must allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot)
  • Create an llms.txt file summarising your site's expertise (see llmstxt.org)

How to Optimise for Google AI Overviews Specifically

Pages cited in AI Overviews tend to share these characteristics (Semrush analysis, Q2 2026):

  • Position 1–5 in organic results for the target query. AI Overviews rarely cite content from page 2.
  • Direct answer in the first paragraph. The AI needs to find the answer quickly. Bury it in paragraph 6 and you will not be cited.
  • Page structured with H2 and H3 headings that mirror the sub-questions users have.
  • Domain authority of 40+ (Ahrefs scale). Lower authority sites are cited less frequently.
  • Content updated within 12 months for topics where recency matters.

For topics where your content already ranks on page 1, add a direct-answer paragraph at the top and submit the URL for reindexing in Google Search Console. Many sites see AI Overview citations within 2–4 weeks of this change.

Practical Steps for Your SEO Strategy in 2026

Audit your existing content

Pull your top 20 pages from Google Search Console. For each:

  1. Is there a direct answer to the target question in the first 100 words?
  2. Does the page have a FAQ section?
  3. Is FAQPage or HowTo schema implemented?
  4. Was it updated in the last 6 months?

Fix the gaps before creating new content.

Keyword research for AI search

Standard keyword research still applies. Add a layer: for your target keywords, look at what appears in the "People Also Ask" boxes. These are the sub-questions Google expects users to have. Add them as H2 sections in your content.

Also check what AI Overviews currently show for your keywords. If your competitor is being cited, look at their content structure and improve on it.

Build topical authority

Create content clusters: one comprehensive pillar page on a broad topic, supported by 5–10 detailed sub-topic articles linked back to it. For a digital marketing agency, the pillar might be "Google Ads for Small Business" with sub-articles on "Google Ads cost," "Google Ads campaign types," "how to write Google Ads copy," etc.

This cluster structure signals topical expertise to both Google and AI systems.

Fix your robots.txt

Many sites are still blocking GPTBot and CCBot in their robots.txt. This prevents AI search tools from indexing your content. If you want to appear in ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, you must allow these crawlers.

Required permissions in robots.txt:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: anthropic-ai
Allow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /

Add schema markup

At minimum, every website needs:

  • Organization schema (company name, logo, contact, social profiles)
  • WebSite schema with SearchAction
  • BreadcrumbList on all internal pages
  • FAQPage on any page with Q&A content
  • Article or BlogPosting on all blog posts with datePublished and dateModified
  • LocalBusiness if you serve specific geographic areas

Metrics to Track in 2026

Traditional metrics still matter (organic traffic, rankings, backlinks). Add:

  • Branded search volume: if AI tools are citing you, branded searches increase as users seek out your site directly.
  • Direct traffic: users who first encounter your brand in an AI answer often type your URL directly next time.
  • AI Overview appearance rate: track how often your content appears in AI Overviews for target keywords. Tools like BrightEdge and Authoritas now track this.
  • Referral traffic from AI tools: set up tracking to measure direct referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI sources.

What Not to Do

  • Do not publish AI-generated content without human editing. Google quality raters flag thin, generic content. AI-generated articles that pass no human judgment are increasingly penalised.
  • Do not chase AI Overviews at the expense of traditional SEO. Pages need to rank first before they can be cited.
  • Do not ignore technical SEO. A slow site with crawl errors will not be cited regardless of content quality.
